Filoli is more than a country house and gardens; it’s a floral adventure ~ one sure to leave your senses aglow after a visit of any length.
Located about halfway between Silicon Valley and San Francisco near the village of Woodside, Filoli’s gardens are world-class, but it is the garden house that remains one of my favorites after nearly 10 years as a Filoli member.
Especially during spring, the blue, pink and white hyacinths will nearly overwhelm your sense of smell with a potpourri of fragrance that will leave a lasting remembrance.
A well spring of beauty, the garden house is adorned with beautiful magnolia and camellia blossoms, and with tulips, daffodils and multiple colors of dainty muscari. It is a haven for the hurried soul; a balm for the aching heart.
Filoli was once owned by the Roth family. Sitting in the garden house, one can almost imagine Lurline Roth sitting next to you in one of the four comfortably cushioned chairs. You can see her pushing a button to alert the staff for more freshly squeezed lemonade.
Under the Roths’ care, the house was maintained and the gardens became renown throughout the world.
"Mrs. Roth made Filoli her home until 1975 when she donated 125 acres, which included the house and formal garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for the enjoyment and inspiration of future generations," according to Filoli's website.

There are many other adventures to undertake at Filoli, from hikes through the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the orchard that is filled with daffodils. There is also the historic house, which has been featured in movies.
